How a smart meter can make your home energy efficient

Climate change is a real problem, and it’s on everyone’s mind. There are nearly 60% of people who say they would love to use things that help the environment if they had a better understanding of what they can do to help mother nature.

Despite the noise around reducing single-use plastic and recycling, there’s one missing thing in the climate change conversation i.e. how to become more energy efficient.

Do you know we can get 11% closer to the United Kingdom’s 2050 carbon emission target right now by just taking some energy efficiency measures at our homes?

In addition to what we can do in our households, the UK’s energy system is in urgent need of an upgrade.

The country’s current outdated energy system wastes nearly millions of pounds worth of energy, just because the current system cannot map out accurately when and where the demand is high. However, the smart meters in our homes can provide all data needed for the whole nation to be more energy efficient.

By upgrading our current system with a smart energy system and adopting green technology, we could save our country millions of pounds every year. It can also help in cutting carbon emission, which will further help us meet the government’s 2050 carbon emission target.

If every household in the UK got a smart meter, we could nearly save the same amount of energy as it takes to power every single household in Cardiff, Aberdeen, and Manchester for a year.

It’s said that currently nearly £650million is getting wasted by our current outdated energy system, which could be saved if we get a smarter and more efficient energy infrastructure. Every UK household can play a big role in cutting this waste by getting a smart meter in their house.

There are chances that you might already be aware that these smart meters can help you monitor your energy consumption so that you can decrease your consumption. Additionally, they’ll also help in monitoring and managing our energy supply at a country level.

The data of smart meters will allow us to understand when, where, and how much energy is consumed across the nation. This means the government will be able to have a better plan for high demand and will waste less energy.

Apart from helping to reduce the amount of wastage, the new system will also allow the nation to lessen its reliance on harmful fossil fuels. This smart system can predict demand better, and we will be able to store and use electricity from reliable green sources.

Final words

If every home in the UK switches to a smart meter, the country will become smarter. Each town and city can play a part in building up a picture of how much electricity is needed.

Demand for energy – especially electricity- is predicted to increase by nearly 50% by the year 2050, so the right time to act is now. This is because the world is moving towards green technology and is adopting things such as electric cars and heat pumps, and there’s a need to ensure that we have a stable green source of energy to meet the high demand in the future.
