New discovery sheds further light on Mayan culture

The Mayans were one of the most interesting civilizations that ever lived. It appears from what history can tell us that they ruled a large area and within a short amount of time were wiped out. It was one of the great mysteries of history how this civilization that seemed so powerful and to have so much in the eighth century, quickly faded away in the ninth century. Scientists know that Mayans started to abandon the large cities they had built and that before long the entire civilization collapsed. Whether this was due to weather patterns, wars, or lack of sustainability is unknown.

It is for this reason that whenever new information is found out about the Mayan people, there is excitement. There is a huge demand in the historic fields to have a better understanding of the Mayan people. Based on their architecture and culture it is clear they were highly intelligent and ahead of many other civilizations at that time. They followed astronomy, mathematics, a calendar system, and invented hot chocolate. Anyone that invents hot chocolate is a superior civilization in my eyes.

While most people are aware of the incredible architecture of the Mayan people with the huge step-pyramid temples to rival the constructions of ancient Egypt. Yet what many people don’t realize is there there are intricate networks underground between these towers. At present, there is a huge project ongoing to better understand these underground networks. The Yucutan Peninsula which is located in SouthEastern Mexico is the particular focus of the study as it has the longest flooded cave ever discovered on Earth at 346 kilometers long.

Recently the team opened up a new area of the cave and found a wealth of ancient treasures. After dating it appears the objects are at least 1,000 years old and were put there as offerings to the Gods. This small part of the cave was actually discovered a long time ago in 19966 but it was left untouched back then so when archaeologists came across it, everything was in its original condition. There are nearly 200 objects in the cave and it contains all kinds of offerings from vases and plates to incense burners.

Experts argue that its prominent location, its inbuilt security, and the objects placed there to suggest that it was an important holy site at that time. For this reason, archaeologists have sealed the cave and allowed the objects to remain there. These caverns were considered to be sacred spaces in Mayan cultures and are incredibly important in understanding this important civilization.

Scientists and historians hope that by studying these caves in more detail they will be able to finally answer the great mystery of what happened to the Mayans. These caves have largely gone untouched since the Mayans fled the city and so they provide a snapshot in time right before the Mayans left. Not only that but they also have a lot of material through the history of the Mayan civilization. This means that experts can not only try to solve the ending of this incredible civilization but it’s birth and rise over time as well.

While history is always in the past the advanced technologies that we are creating and the new techniques we have of exploring mean that we can continue to uncover new things about the ancient world. Who knows what inventions will come in the future that will allow us to fully understand everything that took place back then. I hope we are still around to learn how the Mayans disappeared and what caused such a great civilization to decline.
